HELLO HUMMINGBIRD

Image

Proud-purple and glorious-green feathers are dancing among the evening gladiolas outside my picture-window. I happily hop off the sofa as fast as a nine-year old boy chasing a departing ice-cream truck to see this little-winged creature flapping his wings in a flight of delight.

Seeing a hummingbird is a sudden shot of serendipity for me. I love it. Absolutely love it.

Last week I wrote about seeing a hummingbird and an evil “spirit of doubt” shot up on me suggesting maybe it was a cicada and not a hummingbird. So seeing this well sought-out bird tonight was extra-special for me.

In awe, I watch from the over-sized window as this little-guy delicately dances in the garden and then abandons the sweet-nectar from the flower to quickly approach me. He rises up and hovers like a helicopter shooting radar on the Pennsylvania-Turnpike determined to trap the next person that abuses the speed-limit, the precious bird waves his wings endlessly in mid-air at eye-level reminding me of “Flipper” sticking his head out of the water squeaking a message.

The window is eight-feet wide yet the bird flies directly in front of me, fluttering his wings a mile a minute, stationary just two feet away from my face for not less than a full minute. It is as if the message is, look at me I am a hummingbird. No, I am not a cicada. I am a real live hummingbird within arm’s-length of you just in case you doubt my presence like you did last week and if that sheet of glass was not separating us; I would really be “in your face” tapping your head with my sleek nose right between your eyes.

I needed this today. Today, I was wondering…how interested is God in me. Doubt was creeping in although I once wrote about a sparrow not falling to the ground without God knowing about it. Matthew 10:29-31 states, “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.”

Is God interested in Timothy Schwartz, just a guy on a journey? Yes He is! I believe He shows us things when we need to hear a certain message. He loves us immensely.

That hummingbird if it could talk would most likely say, look at me and say, “I am beautiful, just what you like to catch with your eye and no I am not a cicada. I am going to stay here an extended period of time directly in your face because I am talking to YOU. We are eye to eye. I want you to see me and enjoy the living-nature God places in front of you. After-all, my heart beats 21 times a second. Are you impressed?”

Did the bird actually say those words or even capable of such thoughts? Absolutely not! No, I have not gone crazy.

Did God point out this vibrant, living and breathing flying-artwork for me to appreciate? Maybe, maybe not. I do not know for sure but I do know this sighting warmed my heart and it made me feel as if God showed up delivering a delicious, spoonful of serendipity. Just what the Doctor ordered.
